Why I Love - The Lorna Edwards Story
Earlier this week I saw this posted on Twitter (I tell myself I am trying to come off it, it really is a horrible place to be, but after a decade or so it’s proving difficult to detach myself).
As with most bold statements, the devil is in the detail and I’m very firmly in the camp of proving a concept BEFORE you invest big bucks.
VEO footage isn’t perfect. But it’s fine as a Step 4/5/6/7 club to get bits of video, moments, and goals out there in the world for regular and would-be supporters.
We get a lot of VEO footage submitted to our Goal of the Month competition. It’s fine, and without it there would be no Goal of the Month competition because only Scott McNeish’s videos could be entered (he’s always perfectly positioned behind the goal).
We’d all love great HD/4K production values for our team’s goals and great moments, the reality in grassroots football is that we all do the absolute best we can with what we’ve got, the people, the equipment and the know-how.
So keep the VEO footage flowing!

Match of the Weekend: Slough Town vs Farnborough
Sat 16th December / 3pm / Arbour Park
It’s been a month since the ‘infamous’ clash of these two sides that saw Slough win 2-1 in the FA Trophy Second Round.
The Rebels are one of the form sides in the Vanarama National League South and in Johnny Goddard (pictured) have the division’s player of the month. Scott Davies has seen Dom Hutchinson’s loan spell ended but can all on Gary Abisogun who is back in the squad and new 21-year-old Bulgarian striker Slavi Spasov.
Additional food options (mainly why we’re recommending this one!) include Hog roast rolls, Chips, pigs in blankets & gravy, Mulled wine and mince pies.
Segregation is in place for this match. Full details on the Slough Town website here.
With the weather as it is right now, we’re recommending games on 3G pitches which also includes Bracknell Town vs Poole Town and Berks County vs Rising Ballers Kensington at Ascot United.
Why I Love: Playing Football in my Thirties
One October evening in 2022, I arrived at my first football training session. England had just won the EUROs, and like so many women and girls - I felt inspired.
However, at 34, I assumed my playing days were behind me. An avid football fan all my life, I’d never played.
But post-pandemic I decided to grab life by the footballs, and have a go. I was nervous, sure I wouldn’t be good or fit enough - I needn’t have been.
Over the next 6 months - our group of 6 women turned into a 22-strong squad. And like the perfect seasoning; it’s our blend of different ages, life and playing experiences - that make Wokingham & Emmbrook Ladies special.
I’d have never have considered joining a team in my twenties, plagued by insecurities and concern for social pressure. But in my thirties, it’s easier to let go, worry less and enjoy every minute.
The football is great, I’m fitter, I’m even a little better - but what I really love is the people. To be a part of a group of women who support you, on and off the pitch. To know if you’re having a bad day, training and game days are sure to pick you up.
These 22 women aren’t just my friends, they’re my sisters.
