It was great to get down to The Rivermoor this week and watch Woodley United pick up a thoroughly deserved three points against Langley.
The Kestrels were bottom of the Combined Counties League Division One at the time so I must admit to expecting a Langley win, but I could not have been more wrong - and to manager Jordan Blake’s credit, even when they went down to 10 men, his side were never flustered.
Ty Moorcraft was the hero with two goals but he was also sent off in the second half for a second yellow card, so I can only hope Woodley are able to build some momentum in his absence.
You thought 2024s Great Escape by Binfield was impressive? Woodley could certainly emulate their Berkshire neighbours this season.
I’ve not been to The Rivermoor since the start of the season but I was intrigued by how far away the pitch was from the supporters on the side with the seated area. A cunning plan by [landlords] Reading City manager Simon Johnson to reduce the width of the pitch - it always feels like a MASSIVE pitch - I pondered.
No.. the club has endured some heavy flooding in recent years and decided in that space to install three big soakaways to help drain the pitch. They can’t stop the river flooding but they can certainly get rid of the water faster and the pitch remains in good nick down there.
The club’s goals are on wheels so they’ve simply shifted it across to accommodate - .
It was also lovely to bump into Margaret (pictured above) and Alan who usually do the Woodley gate, They are or were involved with Twyford and the Thames Valley Premier League, and always offer a warm welcome - it’s lovely to spend a bit of time chatting with them!

Hitting The Road: Special Edition Match Programme for Reading YMCA vs AFC Winkfield
Football in Berkshire is proud to launch ‘Hitting The Road’, a celebration of community football in the Royal County.
Taking a hint from the brilliant East Berks Football League’s regular SHOWCASE games, the FiB team will be picking a game or two each season across the men’s and women’s season as a ‘Hitting The Road’ event, and we’d love you to come and join us.
As a trial run, we thought where better than Reading YMCA – winners of the 2024 Berkshire Football Awards Matchday Experience trophy – to host our first Hitting The Road event.
The Thames Valley Premier League side play out at Padworth Village Hall off the A4 Bath Road near Reading and will face AFC Winkfield.
Entry is usually free – and will remain so – but Football in Berkshire will be producing a limited edition matchday programme – which can be purchased in advance – to mark the event with a few words from our special guest, Paul Watson.
Paul kindly hosted the Berkshire Football Awards in 2024 but will be most well known as a panellist on Guardian Football Weekly, co-host of The Sweeper podcast and author of the brilliant football book ‘Up Pohnpei!’.
