I think when a manager leaves your club in non-league football it cuts way deeper than the professional game.
Even a beloved boss like Steve Coppell at Reading, for a lot of fans of the Royals there was of course a mourning spell, but it’s very quickly onto the rumour sites, in the know Twitter accounts spouting their gossip and betting markets being taken as gospel.
In non-league though, I don’t think that happens. The mourning period is extended. The chances are if the manager has been around for a decent amount of time, as supporters you’ve got to know them quite well post-match.
I know Yashwa Romeo has given lifts to Thatcham Town fans, I know Bobby Wilkinson rang Bracknell supporters up during Covid. Everyone is just a little bit more connected.
So seeing Jordan Ive depart Bracknell this week has seen a fair bit of mourning. He was obviously well-liked by the fans for the job he did coming in last season and it’s going to take a while for that to ease.
I’m working on a piece with a couple of managers currently out of work, digging a little deeper on what it’s like for them when they get the boot in the grassroots game. There’s no multi-million pound cushion what is undoubtedly a dented pride from those leaving a club.
In the meantime for Bracknell, an ex-Premier League player in charge for a game or two might just soften the blow!

Match of the Weekend
Saturday 7th September / 3pm / Arbour Park
Slough Town vs Hemel Hempstead Town - Vanarama National League South
Both sides have had brilliant starts to the season, Slough are unbeaten in a year at Arbour Park while Bobby Wilkinson’s Hemel haven’t lost yet this season. Something’s got to give.
Food Review: Bracknell Town
I know this might seem opportunistic, but I promise The Wandering Tractor filed his Bracknell Town review on Monday!
